The Emil G. Racovi\u021b\u0103 Institute for the Study of Life in Extreme Conditions is a research institute of Babe\u015f-Bolyai University, organized as a network of specialized research centres across the university’s academic environment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Inspired by the scientific legacy of Emil Gheorghe Racovi\u021b\u0103 – naturalist, Antarctic explorer, founder of biospeleology, professor and rector of the University of Cluj – the Emil G. Racovi\u021b\u0103 Institute for the Study of Life in Extreme Conditions advances interdisciplinary research on life at the limits, carrying forward his spirit of exploration, science, and discovery across caves, polar regions, ocean depths, mountain ecosystems, human resilience, and outer space.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A LEGACY ROOTED IN CLUJ<\/h6>

In 1920, Emil G. Racovit\u0103 established the world's first Institute of Speleology at the University of Cluj, today's Babe\u015f-Bolyai University, laying the foundations of modern biospeleology. <\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

In 2020, one hundred years after its original creation, the Institute was re-opened within Babe\u015f-Bolyai University. Babes-Bolyai University is Romania’s largest academic community and one of the country’s most important research universities. With academic roots going back to 1581, UBB has a\u00a0multicutlural\u00a0profile, with Romanian, Hungarian, and German as official languages of study, alongside programs in several international languages.\u00a0<\/span>Since 2016, Babe\u0219-Bolyai University occupied the first position in our National\u00a0Metaranking\u00a0\u2013\u00a0initiated\u00a0by the Romanian Ministry of Education and Research and continued by Ad-Astra Association of Romanian researchers -, which combines the major international ranking of universities (e.g., ARWU\/QS\/THE, etc.).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Within this academic environment, the Emil G.
