
As part of the collaboration between the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV, Italy) and the Faculty of Environmental Science and Engineering at Babeș-Bolyai University, dr. Artur Ionescu and dr. Giancarlo Tamburello conducted a field campaign in the Covasna region of Romania to investigate the natural degassing of deep CO₂ through mofettes and diffuse soil emissions. The article published by INGVambiente highlights the geological significance of the Transylvanian mofettes, the methodologies used to quantify diffuse CO₂ fluxes, and their importance for understanding deep geodynamic processes and the Earth’s carbon cycle. The study further emphasizes the exceptional value of the Eastern Carpathians as a natural laboratory for investigating deep fluid migration and tectonic degassing.
